Play Mode

会听你吹奏的哨笛跟奏模式

Play Mode is a free play-along game on TinWhistleTab. You play a tune on your own tin whistle, it listens through your microphone and scores every note as you play: the right note at the right time, a little early or late, or missed. It runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to install, and it works on 900+ of the 1,200+ tabs on the site.

它能做什么

适合谁

Players who can read a tab but lose their place, rush the easy bits or never find out which notes they keep missing. Play Mode tells you, note by note, without a teacher in the room.

It suits beginners on their first tunes, adults learning on their own, and children who practise more when there is a score to beat. After a run you can share a challenge link, and whoever opens it plays the same tune trying to beat your score, which works for a class as well as for friends.

It is not a lesson. It checks notes and timing, not tone or ornaments, so pair it with the guides when you are learning a new technique.

怎么开始

  1. 1Open a tab with a Play along button, next to Practice under the title, or pick one of the tunes below.
  2. 2Press Enable microphone and allow it when your browser asks. Play any note to pass the mic check.
  3. 3Choose a tempo (start at 50% on a new tune), your whistle and whether you want the guide melody, drone and rhythm. Headphones help with the guide melody on.
  4. 4Press Start playing, wait for the count-in and play each note as it reaches the line.
  5. 5Read your grades, then go again: slower if you missed a lot, faster once you are mostly Spot on.

哪些曲子可以用

Every tab that has ABC notation behind it, which is 900+ of the 1,200+ tabs on the site. Those tabs show a Play along button next to Practice. ABC carries the rhythm of the tune as well as the notes, and Play Mode needs both to know when each note is due.

The rest, mostly songs added as plain letters, can't be scored for timing yet. They still have Practice mode, which listens too but waits for each note instead of keeping time. More tunes become playable as their ABC is added.

你的声音去了哪里

The listening happens on your device. Your browser's own audio engine works out the pitch of what you play, many times a second, and the game compares it with the tune. The microphone sound is never recorded, stored or uploaded, and it isn't played back through your speakers.

When a run ends, only the result is saved: score, accuracy, longest streak, tempo and the number of notes, under your account or an anonymous device ID, for the weekly leaderboard. We also log anonymous technical numbers about each run, such as how many moments had a clear note, to fix microphone problems. Never the sound itself.

常见问题

Is there a tin whistle app that listens to you play?

Yes. Play Mode on TinWhistleTab listens through your microphone while you play a tune on your own whistle and scores each note for the right pitch at the right time. It is free, runs in the browser on a phone or computer, and works on 900+ tunes.

Is Play Mode free?

Yes, on every playable tune, with no account. A free account only keeps your scores across devices and puts your name on each tune's weekly leaderboard.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes, in a current browser on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, Mac or Chromebook. The built-in microphone is enough. If you play over the phone speaker with the guide melody on, the mic can hear the melody instead of you, so use headphones or switch the melody off.

Is my playing recorded?

No. The sound is analysed on your device as you play and is never recorded, stored or uploaded. Only the result of a run (score, accuracy, longest streak, tempo) is saved for the leaderboard.

Does it work with a C whistle or a low D?

Yes. Choose your whistle before you start: high G, F, E flat, D, C, B flat, A, low G, low F or low D. You play the fingerings shown on the tab and Play Mode allows for the key of your whistle.

Why does it say it can't hear me?

Check that the browser is allowed to use the microphone and that it is not muted, then play a steady note a little closer to the device. A quiet room helps. Over speakers the guide melody can drown you out, so try headphones.

How is it different from Practice mode?

Practice mode, also on every tab, waits for you: it moves on only when you play the right note, so you can learn the notes at your own pace. Play Mode keeps time with the music and scores your timing as well as your notes, so it is the next step once you know the notes.

Does it judge my tone or ornaments?

No. It checks which note you play and when it starts. It does not grade tone, breath or ornaments such as cuts, taps and rolls, so a teacher or a recording of yourself is still the best judge of those.
